Case study: Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) console design

New equipment is to be added to the RNZN’s J3 Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) console.

The RNZN wanted the placement and arrangement of the new equipment reviewed by the human systems group to ensure optimal operational safety and efficiency.

GoPro cameras were mounted on the console and the coxswain’s helmet and chest and used to record operational tasks.  The video data was reviewed in order to understand how the controls and instrumentation are used and to identify human engineering issues.

The findings of the assessment will assist the RNZN in the redesign of the J3 RHIB console.
