Who We Are

The Defence Technology Agency is part of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), based at the Devonport Naval Base in Auckland. We provide research, science and technology support to the NZDF and the Ministry of Defence.

About Us

We develop technical solutions that are used across all areas of Defence operations. We mainly work with the NZDF and the Ministry of Defence, and our advice is based on good scientific practice, is independent and transparent.

Our History

We have been operating for nearly 70 years with several name changes over this time. Initially our research and development focused on underwater acoustics and then broadened to maritime research. We now work in a wide range of areas across defence operations.

New Zealand Defence Force and Us

Through our research, science and technology work we give advice and support to the Defence Force and the Ministry to help them make decisions about buying military equipment/capabilities, enhancing existing ones and identifying new technologies for future use.

Our Partners

We develop technologies that may have benefit or use outside the NZDF. Partnering with other organisations helps us to take these technologies into the marketplace.

Our People

Our people include scientists, technologists, technicians and business services staff. We have a Director, a Principal Scientist and five Group Directors.
