DTA’s Sally Garrett and her sailing partner Rob Croft, competed for the second time in the two-handed Round New Zealand Yacht Race on Expedition Coppelia finishing the race on the 13th of February. They won the final leg from Napier to Auckland on handicap and finished third overall on handicap. Sally is still the only woman to have completed the Round New Zealand Yacht race.
Not content with her success in the Round New Zealand Yacht Race Sally and her team of seven women, from the Royal Akarana Yacht Club, won the 2019 NZ Women’s National Keelboat Championship title at the beginning of April.
The thirteen teams competed over three days in varying conditions, from sunshine and light winds, to heavy rain with little wind and a final day of steady breezes, sailing conditions that put all the teams to the test.
Sally said, “We’ve sailed together for 20 years and this is our first win.” Sally has been on the winning yacht a few times as a crew member but this is the first time she has won it as a skipper.
