US snaps up kiwi military technology

The United States Navy has purchased six of the Defence Technology Agency’s diver training systems. The diver training systems, known as METRES (Maritime EOD Training, Ranging and Evaluation System) by the US Navy, include a composite replica mine which sits on the seabed and trains divers who interact with them. The system can be configured to the specifications of a variety of mines and carries sensors that can detect approaching divers and activates in various ways depending on how noisy or active they are around it. Now there is interest from overseas in the DTA developed portable multi influence sensor. The multi influence sensor is possibly the world’s first fully-portable unit for measuring ship signatures. Working out a ship’s signature allows designers to work at reducing it, this is important because the ship’s signature can be used to trigger torpedoes and mines.
